What started in New York City as an alternative to traditional jewelry shows and exhibitions in 2016 is now making its way to the World Wide Web. Starting May 1, Metal + Smith will roll out the industry’s first virtual trade show experience, connecting retailers, publishers and influencers to a global rolodex of independent jewelry designers. “As a group, we remain committed to maintaining a sense of unity that makes this pivot to an online solution the logical next step for our portfolio,” commented Olivia Lucas, Senior Account Manager.
The inspiration behind it all: understanding that our industry will recover over time, but innovations like this will help keep our industry’s borders open. “Designers can’t pause their business and hope to stay relevant. As retailers and publishers change their focus online, designers will also need to find smart ways to follow suit, ”says Lucas.
The virtual event will feature a small group of global innovators with great stories to tell each month. Similar to a badge for a physical trade show, the business will need an identifier, provided by email, to access the virtual platform. Once the selection is made on the virtual floor plan, the guest is taken to the “Designer Residence” – the virtual equivalent of the booths – where prices and product details, brand statements, founder’s notes and contact details are available.
