(PRESS RELEASE) MONROVIA, Calif. – Christian Tse Design & Manufacturing (CTD&M) announced the arrival of its all-new robotic polishing system at its jewelry production facility in California. In a unique partnership with the Flexible Robotic Environment (FRE) engineering team, the custom VDK-2300 system has been in development since April 2021 and will be officially launched at the CTD&M factory in late September 2022. Designed by ENG as a closed modular system, the VDK-2300 operates in an optimized footprint and avoids waste. With its ease of use, low maintenance and high reliability, the system requires low human interaction, thus solving labor issues such as the retention and availability of skilled craftsmen. The system can polish most hard jewelry designs such as rings, earrings, bangles, pendants and brooches.
“Our new robotic polishers enable optimal efficiency and savings for the fine jewelry brands we manufacture for,” says Christian Tse, award-winning jewelry designer and president of CTD&M. “We worked closely with the FRE team to develop a highly customized automated tool, which has produced the most powerful, flexible and user-friendly jewelry processing system in the world today. These new robots will enable our customers reduce labor costs, and automated precision will ultimately create a better finished product for the fine jewelry consumer.
Tse has been exploring automation in fine jewelry making for years. Pandemic-related restrictions for social distancing have heightened the urgency of his need for robotics. He contacted FRE for a polishing system that could be customized by jewelry design. Engineers responded with a dual-arm robot solution that operates in a fully enclosed environment of structural aluminum, industrial safety mesh, and full-frame Lexan windows for loading jewelry to be polished. The new system created for CTD&M includes a robot that holds the jewel and another that holds the specific polishing tool required for that particular design. Specialized fixtures and multiple tool changers allow the VDK-2300 system to process nearly the full range of metals used in fine jewelry today.
“The VDK-2300 system is a game-changer for fine jewelry manufacturing,” said Vojislav Kalanovic, PhD and president of Flexible Robotic Environment. “As a company that commercialized robotic jewelry processing, we were the perfect partner for Christian Tse. At Flexible Robotic Environment, we offer a complete offering of automated jewelry processing solutions, and Christian’s vision of the future of manufacturing inspired us to create one of the most flexible and efficient jewelry polishing systems. performers ever created. We’re thrilled to have been a part of it, and can’t wait to see where Christian and his team take us next!”
